Tiger Open aids athletics

Conway Solid Gold will hold its 33rd annual Tiger Open Golf Tournament May 14 at Coastal Carolina University’s Hackler Golf Course.

The tournament features a four-person captain’s choice format and begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Entry fee is $60 per player until May 11 and $70 thereafter. The fee includes golf, carts, range balls, beverages and lunch. There will be several special contests including closest to the pin and longest drive for men and woman as well as a chance to win a 2016 Mustang donated by Conway Ford for a hole-in-one on the No. 7 hole. Single and shared tee box signs are available for $250 and $100, respectively.

CEF to sponsor tournament

Child Evangelism Fellowship’s seventh annual benefit golf tournament for the afterschool Good News Club program will be held June 4 at Coastal Carolina University’s Hackler Golf Course. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and tee time is 8:30 a.m.

The tournament features a captain’s choice format and begins with a shotgun start. Entry fees are $240 per foursome. Breakfast and lunch are included in the entry fee. Pee Dee JDRF Walk planned

The Palmetto Pee Dee JDRF (formerly known as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) Walk will be held June 4 at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Jamestown to sponsor tournament

The fifth annual Jamestown Baptist Church Golf Tournament will be held June 11 beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. at Burning Ridge Golf Club.

The tournament features a four-man captain’s choice format, and the entry fee is $75 per player or $300 per team.

Tee sponsorships are available for $100.

ColorBurst 5k planned in June

A ColorBurst 5K run will be held June 5 at 2 p.m. on grounds of TicketReturn.com Field.

This family friendly, 5K fun run will be staged in partnership with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and will be held prior to the team’s home game against the Potomac Nationals.

Tickets for the ColorBurst 5K Run will also include a ticket to the game to be held later the same day.

The CB5K experience brings people from all walks of life together in a technicolor burst of energy and excitement; blending color, music and ‘good vibes’ against the backdrop of a 5K fun-run suitable for the entire family.

Where this event differs from the traditional 5Ks is in the two key elements of fun: amazing music and gallons of gloriously-colored paint. At each interval along the course, CB5K crew blast each participant with nontoxic, hypoallergenic, washable, water-based paint from the sidelines.

Guests will be treated to an interactive pre-party and post-party at the fully branded CB5K stage with DJs, emcees, giveaways and family-focused fun.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will be working alongside Color Burst 5K to donate a portion of the race ticket sale proceeds to the team’s charitable partner Tidelands Health Foundation

USC Coach Muschamp to address local Gamecocks

University of South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp will be the featured speaker at the Horry and Georgetown County Gamecock Club Spring Meeting on May 10 at Crown Reef Resort, 2913 South Ocean Blvd., Myrtle Beach. Muschamp will be available for autographs beginning at 5 p.m.

Tickets are $35 and include a sit-down dinner at 6 p.m. A cash bar will also be available. There will be a raffle for prizes.

Lower Cape Fear Hospice Mercy Care is looking for golfers and sponsors for its 15th annual John Heiert/Jean Wheeler Memorial Golf Tournament June 11 at River Oaks Golf Plantation, 831 River Oaks Drive in Myrtle Beach. The tournament was started in 2001 by Mike and Suzi Wheeler, who had both lost spouses to cancer. The Wheelers had previously worked together and were reacquainted through Mercy Care. 3 Doors Down to perform

American Music Award winning artists 3 Doors Down will be lighting up the night at Myrtle Beach Speedway May 5. Supporting their sixth album Us and the Night, the band will hit the Grand Strand in the intimate setting of the Myrtle Beach Speedway Amphitheater. The 5,000-fan venue will give every fan an up-close and personal view of the 16-time platinum group.

Host families needed

The Ripken Experience Myrtle Beach will play host to The Victorian Kookaburras baseball team from Melbourne, Australia, at its annual Surf’s Up Tournament the week of July 10-15. Nineteen host families are needed to help accommodate the 38 players from three teams, one 14U and two 16U, and serve as ambassadors for Myrtle Beach during their trip.

“Australian teams have participated in our tournaments for the past five summer seasons,” said Bobby Holland, general manager of The Ripken Experience Myrtle Beach. “This serves as a great opportunity for the domestic teams present that week to face international competition. The Australian teams typically display unprecedented sportsmanship during the tournament, as The Kookaburras are the epitome of what travel baseball and good sportsmanship is all about.”

Military Card set giveaway planned

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Embrace Hospice are welcoming applications for the third annual Military Card Set Giveaway. The presenting sponsor, Embrace Hospice, is a Florence-based hospice center that will be giving away sets to the first 1,000 fans through the gates prior to the May 21 game against the Lynchburg Hillcats. This year’s military appreciation day falls on Armed Forces Day. Thirty-six veterans will be selected for the card set, with a focus on Korean War veterans.

The 33rd annual National Retired Military Golf Classic will be held May 31 through June 4. All players must be retired military members of any branch of the uniformed services and/or their spouses.

The 2016 tournament begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start each day, and will be played at the Myrtle Beach National Golf Club South Creek and West, Pine Lakes, Burning Ridge, Pine Hills at Myrtlewood Country Club, Wild Wing Resort and The World Tour. The tournaments are four-person scrambles of four flights (A, B, C and D players).

Professionals to visit Grand Strand

A number of former professional athletes will be at The Ripken Experience Myrtle Beach youth baseball and softball complex next summer as part of the celebrity ambassador series lineup for the 2016 tournament season. Legendary ambassadors include National Baseball Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr., Andre Dawson and Fergie Jenkins, as well as USA Olympic Gold Medalist Jennie Finch, who will headline two weeks of girls’ fast-pitch softball tournaments at the facility.

The 2016 Ripken Experience Myrtle Beach tournament ambassador series will offer weeklong participants the opportunity to meet former Major Leaguers and hear stories and life lessons based on their professional experiences.
