Tennis

The 2016 North Hills Club Spring Open NC L2 / STA L3 was completed April 8-10 at the North Hills Club in Raleigh, N.C. This Level 2 sanctioned event had 338 players including three juniors from the Grand Strand.

Their results were:

— Britton Bellamy lost in the first round 6-1, 6-3 to the No. 3 seed from Carrolton, Ga., in the Boy’s 18 Blue Singles. In the consolation, Bellamy won 7-6, 6-2 over a player from Charlotte and then won 6-3, 6-1 over a player from Greenville but next lost 6-3, 6-3 to a player from Hilton Head Island. 

— Bailey Deskins lost 6-1, 6-0 in the first round to the No. 3 seed from Huntersville, N.C., in the Girl’s 18 Red Singles. In the consolation, Deskins lost 6-3, 6-3 to a player from Raleigh.

— Paxton Gentry lost in the first round 6-0, 6-0 to a player from Charlotte in the Girl’s 18 Blue Singles. In the consolation, Gentry lost 6-1, 6-3 to player from Summerfield, N.C.  

Mount Pleasant tourney

The Randall Heffron Memorial tournament was completed April 8-10 at the Creekside Tennis Club in Mount Pleasant. This Level 3 sanctioned event had 96 players including 10 local juniors.

Their results were:  

— Boy’s 10 Singles: Luke Skillman won two matches and lost one in the round-robin event with four players to finish second. In the Boy’s 12 Doubles green dot Luke Skillman and partner were awarded the title when the Mount Pleasant team withdrew.   

— Boy’s 16 Singles: Josh Wallen won his first round 6-4, 6-4 over a player from Hilton Head Island and then lost 6-2, 6-1 to the No. 1 seed from Charleston.         

— Girl’s 10 Singles: Laurel Case won all four of her matches in the round-robin event with five players to win the championship. Mia El-Kheddiwi won three of her matches in the same round-robin event to finish in second place.    

— Girl’s 12 Singles: Elena Hartley won her first match when her opponent withdrew and then defeated the No. 4 seed Cassidy Cocca 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. But in the semifinals, Hartley lost 6-3, 6-1 to a player from Daniel Island. Caroline Brothers won her first match 6-0, 6-2 over a player from Mount Pleasant and then lost 6-3, 6-0 to another player from Mount Pleasant. Girl’s 12 Doubles: Cassidy Cocca/Elena Hartley won their first round 8-1 over a team from Daniel Island/ Mount Pleasant and then lost 8-5 to a team from Columbia/Mount Pleasant. Mia Cabildo/Brooke Rogers   lost 8-4 to the same Columbia/Mount Pleasant team.        

— Girl’s 12 Singles green dot: No. 1 seed Brooke Rogers won her first round 6-2, 6-0 over a player from Mount Pleasant and then won 6-1, 6-1 over a player from the Isle of Palms. Advancing to the finals, Rogers won 6-2, 6-3 over the No. 2 seed Mia Cabildo to capture the title. Mia Cabildo won her first round 6-2, 6-1 over a Mount Pleasant player and then won 6-1, 6-1 over another Mount Pleasant player before losing to Rogers.        

— Girl’s 16 Singles: Tatiana Harrelson won four matches to finish first in the round-robin event with five players.        

— Girl’s 16 Doubles: Tatiana Harrelson/Rebecca  Spratt (Charleston) won 8-2 in the finals over a team from Mount Pleasant.     

Florence Challenger

The CCSC Junior Challenger was completed April 8-10 at The Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. This Level 4 sanctioned event had 47 players including six local juniors.

Their results were:

— Boy’s 10 Singles: Alexander Knight lost his first match 4-0, 4-0 to the No. 1 seed from Camden. In the consolation, Knight won 4-0, 4-0 over a Hartsville player and then won the finals 5-4, 1-4, 7-5 over a Camden player to take the title.   

— Girl’s 10 Singles: No. 1 seed Olivia Bull won her first round 4-0, 4-2 over a Camden player and then won 4-0, 4-0 over another Camden player. Next, Bull won 4-1, 4-0 over the No. 4 seed from Camden to reach the finals where she won 4-1, 4-0 over the No. 2 seed from Camden to win the title. No. 3 seed Elizabeth Raynor won her first round 5-3, 4-2 over Sofia Zeballos and then won 1-4, 4-2, 8-6 over Anna Brown to advance to the semifinals where she lost 4-1, 4-0 to the No. 2 seed from Camden.  Earlier, Zeballos lost to Raynor 5-3, 4-2 in the first round. In the consolation, Zeballos won 4-1, 4-2 over a Florence player and then lost 4-1, 4-0 to another Florence player.    

— Girl’s 10 Doubles: No. 1 seeds Olivia Bull/Elizabeth Raynor won 6-1 over a Camden team and then lost  6-0 in the finals to the No. 2 seeds from Camden.   

— Girl’s 14 Singles: Hannah Beam lost all three of her matches in the round-robin event with four players.

Grande Dunes mixer

The Grande Dunes Tennis Club will hold a round-robin mixer Friday, April 15 from 6-8:00 p.m. Unlimited beer and wine. Cost is $20 for members and $30 for nonmembers. Check in and warm up at 5:30 p.m.

Prestwick news

Prestwick’s Member Guest Tournament will be held May 13-14 with matches beginning at 8:30 on Saturday. Divisions offered are 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and Open Divisions. No mixed divisions will be offered. Cost is $80 per team.

Local upcoming tournaments

— Dual Surface tourney

A Dual Surface Junior Tournament will be held in late April for juniors 18 and under in Myrtle Beach. This non-sanctioned singles only tournament will be played on one hybrid court, which is half hard court and half clay court.

The boy’s event will be April 22-24 with an entry deadline of April 19 and the girl’s event will be April 29-May 1 with an entry deadline of April 26.

The dual surface tennis court is located at 3833 Socastee Blvd (inside RH Acres) in the south-end of Myrtle Beach.

 — Grande Dunes Classic

The Grande Dunes Tennis Club Spring Classic (STA 150) will be held May 6-8 at the Grande Dunes Tennis Club in Myrtle Beach.

This Level 2 sanctioned tournament will offer singles, doubles and mixed events.

Entry fee is $53.71 for first singles and $27 for additional singles and $53.71 for first doubles and $27 for additional doubles. Deadline is May 1.
