The Grand Strand Tennis League USTA Adult Combo 65 & Over age group began its season March 6 and will end April 1. The 7.5 level has 87 players on seven teams and will play as many as six matches during their season. Matches consist of three doubles teams. Theses matches are scheduled to be played during the week and a player must play at least one match to qualify for states.

The Combo South Carolina State Championships will be held Oct. 20-24 on Hilton Head Island.

Results for the 65 & Over league were:

— Adult Combo 7.5 Men: Grande Dunes Tennis Club (4-1) with captain Kirk McQuiddy; Litchfield Racquet Club (3-2) with captain Clifton Whitehead and Riverfront Tennis Center (0-4) with captain Ernie Walters.

— Adult Combo 7.5 Women: Riverfront Tennis Center (5-1) with captain Anne Hartis; Litchfield Racquet Club (3-3) with captain Marla Hamby; Grande Dunes Tennis Club (2-4) with captain Barbara Glass and Prestwick Tennis Club (2-4) with captain Ester Goroski.  

70 & Over

The Grand Strand Tennis League 70 & Over started its season Jan. 31 and ended April 4 with three separate leagues.  

April 28-30 South Carolina Adult 70 & Over State Championships will be held at the Palmetto Dunes Resorts on Hilton Head Island 

Results for the 70 & Over league were:

— Adult 3.5 Men: Grande Dunes Tennis Club (5-0) with captain Conrad Hetzer; Kingston Plantation (2-2) with captain Rivers Lynch and Riverfront (0-5) with captain Ralph Horning.

— Adult 3.5 Women: Kingston Plantation (4-2) with captain Kay Moody and Prestwick Tennis Club (2-4) with captain Susie Honeycutt.

— Adult 4.0 Men: Captain John Mack (no facility) is the only team in this division and will advance directly to states.

GSTL Championships

The Grand Strand Tennis League 18 & Over League began Feb. 2 and will end May 9 for the 4.0-5.0+ Men and Women. The season ends May 11 for the 2.5-3.5 Men and Women.

The USTA South Carolina Championships for the 18 & Over 4.0-5.0+ will be held May 28-30 in Aiken. Playing surface TBD.

The USTA South Carolina Championships for the 18 & Over 2.5-3.5 will be held June 4-6 in Greenville. Playing surface TBD.

The Grand Strand Tennis League 40 & Over League began Feb. 2 and will end April 6. The State Championships will be held May 14-16 in Aiken. Playing surface TBD.

The Grand Strand Tennis League 55 & Over League began Jan. 31 and will end April 4. The South Carolina Adult 55 & Over State Championships will be held April 30 – May 2 at the Palmetto Dunes Resort (all levels) on Hilton Head Island. The Adult 55 & Over Sectional Championships will be held Sept. 16-19 in Asheville, N.C.    

Southern 18 Singles

The USTA Southern Level 1A Championships BG 16 & 18 were completed March 25-28 at the Raleigh Parks, Recreational & Cultural Resources in Raleigh. This National Level 4 sanctioned event had 257 players including two from the Grand Strand.

Their results were:

— No. 5 seed Paul Hendrix won his first round 6-4, 6-3 over a player from Duluth, Ga., and then won 6-3, 7-6 over a player from Greensboro, N.C., and won again 4-2, 4-2 over the No. 9 seed from Cumming, Ga. Reaching the quarterfinals, Hendrix lost 4-0, 5-4 to the No. 2 seed from Alpharetta, Ga. In the playoffs, Hendrix won 4-2, 4-2 over a player from Snellville, Ga., and will play another No. 5 seed from Cary, N.C., in the finals. (After press deadlines)            

— Jeffrey Dayton won his first round 7-6, 6-3 over a player from Alpharetta and then lost 6-3, 6-3 to the No. 9 seed from Alpharetta. In the consolation, Dayton advanced one round when his opponent withdrew due to injury and then won 1-4, 4-1, (1-0) over a player from Charlotte and next lost 3-5, 4-0, (1-0) to a player from Cary in the third round.

Southern 18 Doubles

The USTA Southern Level 1A Doubles Championships were completed March 25-28 at the Raleigh Parks, Recreational & Cultural Resources in Raleigh. This National Level 4 sanctioned event had 221 players including two from the Grand Strand.

Their results were:  

— Jeffrey Dayton and Hunter Horton (Lugoff) lost 8-5 in the first round to a team from Alpharetta/ Duluth in the draw of 32 teams in the Boy’s 18 Doubles. 

— No. 5 seeds Paul Hendrix and Chase Schupp (New Orleans, La.) lost 8-4 in the first round to a team from Mount Pleasant/Norcross, Ga. in the Boy’s 18 Doubles.  

Prestwick news

Prestwick Tennis Club’s April Sunday Funday will be held April 3 from 4-6 p.m. The Member/Guest 3.5 Mixer will be held Friday, April 10 from 6-8 p.m. A lucky guest will win a six month membership.

— Dunes Junior Open

• The Dunes Sparks Toyota Junior Open will be held April 15-17 at the Dunes Tennis Club in Myrtle Beach. This Level 3 sanctioned event offers singles for juniors 18 and under. For entry fees check their Tournament ID: 700041516. Deadline is April 10.

 — Dual Surface tourney

• A Dual Surface Junior Open tournament will be held in late April for juniors 18 and under in Myrtle Beach. This non-sanctioned singles only tournament will be played on one hybrid court, which is half hard court and half clay court. The boy’s event will be April 22-24 with an entry deadline of April 19 and the girl’s event will be April 29 – May 1 with an entry deadline of April 26.

The dual surface tennis court is located at 3833 Socastee Blvd (inside RH Acres) in Myrtle Beach.
