Tennis

The City of Myrtle Beach Junior Challenger was completed March 4-6 at the City of Myrtle Beach Tennis Center. This Level 4 sanctioned event had 70 players including 58 local juniors. Last year this event had 76 players including 49 local juniors.

Results of the tournament were:

— Boy’s 10 Singles: No. 2 seed Addison Gordon won his first match 4-1, 4-0 over Foster Cahill and then won 4-2, 4-0 over the No. 3 seed Harrison Horvath to reach the finals where he captured the title with a 1-4, 4-1, (1-0) victory over the No. 1 seed Nolan Bohan. Bohan won his first match 4-1, 4-1 and then won 4-1, 4-0 over Jack Green to advance to the finals where he lost to Gordon.

In the consolation, Jack Green defeated Ashiv Patel 4-1, 5-3 to reach the finals where he defeated the No. 3 seed Harrison Horvath 1-4, 4-0, (1-0) to take the consolation title.   

— Boy’s 12 Singles: No. 2 seed Owen Clifford (Winston Salem, NC) won his first match 4-6, 7-5, (1-0) over Trevor Novotny to advance to the finals where he won 6-2, 6-1 over Sam Ferguson (Wilmington, N.C). 

In the consolation, Trevor Novotny won the finals 6-1, 6-0 over Christian Duerk.

 — Boy’s 12 Singles: Gibson Goodroe won his first round 6-1, 6-1 over Nolan Cahill and then won 6-0, 6-0 over the No. 2 seed Arav Patel to advance to the finals where he won 6-2, 6-4 over David Raynor.

In the consolation, No. 2 seed Arav Patel defeated Nolan Cahill 6-3, 6-4 in the finals.

— Boy’s 14 Singles: No. 2 seed Rivers Cahill won his first match 6-0, 6-0 over Jude Wilkey and then won 6-3, 6-1 over the No. 4 seed William Duerk to reach the finals where he won 6-1, 6-1 over Brandon Mercado.     

In the consolation, Jeffrey Morrow defeated Elliott Finger 6-3, 3-6, (1-0) to reach the finals where he will play the No. 4 seed William Duerk.   

— Girl’s 10 Singles: No. 1 seed Olivia Bull won her first match 4-2, 4-2 over Kate Fico and then won 4-1, 4-1 over the No. 3 seed Mia El-Kheddiwi to reach the finals where she won 4-2, 4-2 over the No. 2 seed Laurel Case. Case won her first match 4-2, 4-0 over Stephanie Davis and then won 4-0, 4-1 over the No. 4 seed Anna Roof to advance to the finals where she lost to Bull.     

In the consolation, Kate Fico won 4-2, 5-5, (1-0) over the No. 4 seed Anna Roof to advance to the finals where she won 4-2, 4-0 over the No. 2 seed Mia El-Kheddiwi. 

— Girl’s 12 Singles: In the round-robin event Isabella Cohen (Durham, N.C.) won all three of her matches with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brooke Rogers and a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cassidy Cocca and a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ryleigh-Caroline Williams. Brooke Rogers won two with a 6-3, 2-6, (10-6) over Cassidy Cocca and a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ryleigh-Carolina Williams and Cassidy Cocca won 6-0, 6-0 over Ryleigh-Carolina Williams.  

— Girl’s 12 Singles: No. 2 seed Elena Hartley won 6-2, 6-1 over the No. 1 seed Mia Cabildo in the finals.      

In the consolation, Siona Sturgeon (Columbia) defeated Gabrielle Bohan 7-6, 5-7, (1-0) in the finals.

— Girl’s 16 Singles: Madison Cullipher (Grimesland, N.C.) defeated the No. 2 seed Carrington Callihan 6-1,   6-1 in the semifinals. And in the other semifinal No. 1 seed Hitomi Kobayashi defeated Lacey Kleppinger (Wilmington) 4-6, 7-6, (1-0). In the finals, Cullipher defeated Kobayashi 6-1, 6-0.

 In the consolation, Lacey Kleppinger (Wilmington) defeated Marie Benedetti 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.  

 — Boy’s 10 Doubles: No. 1 seeds Christian Duerk/Gibson Goodroe defeated Nolan Bohan/Harrison Horvath 6-1 in the finals. In the consolation, No. 2 seeds Addison Gordon/David Raynor defeated Nolan Cahill/ Beckham Kiskunas 6-1 in the finals.

— Boy’s 14 Doubles: No. 2 seeds Rivers Cahill/Jeffrey Morrow defeated the No. 2 seeds Ryan Burch/ William Duerk 8-6 in the finals. In the consolation, Brandon Mercado/Trevor Novotny are set to play Elliott Finger/William Vaught in the finals.      

— Girl’s 10 Doubles: No. 1 seeds Laurel Case/Mia El-Kheddiwi defeated the No. 2 seeds Olivia Bull/Anna Roof 6-4 in the finals. In the consolation, Stephanie Davis/Elise Dozier defeated Anna Brown/Kate Fico     6-2 in the finals.    

— Girl’s 12 Doubles: No. 1 seeds Cassidy Cocca/Brooke Rogers defeated the No. 2 seeds Mia Cabildo/Elena Hartley 8-3 in the finals. In the consolation, Addison Flowers/Aynsley-Aimee Flowers and Gabrielle Bohan/Gabriella Martin are set to play in the finals.        

  

Harrelson wins title

The Lexington County Junior Open was completed March 4-6 at the Lexington County Tennis Complex in Lexington. This Level 3 sanctioned event had 106 players including one junior from the Grand Strand.

Her results were:

— No. 1 seed Tatiana Harrelson won her first match 6-0, 6-0 over a Columbia player and then won 6-1, 6-3 over a player from Hilton Head Island to advance to the finals where she won the championship 6-2, 2-6, (11-9) over a player from Daniel Island.        

In the Girl’s 16 Doubles, No. 1 seeds Tatiana Harrelson and her Charleston partner lost in the first round 8-5 to a team from Daniel Island/West Columbia.

 Mount Pleasant Challenger

The Mount Pleasant Junior Challenger was completed March 4-6 at the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department in Mount Pleasant. This Level 4 sanctioned event had 95 players including two from the Grand Strand.  

Their results were:

— Luke Skillman won in the first round 4-1, 4-1 over a Mount Pleasant player and then won 4-0, 4-0 over another player from Mount Pleasant in the Boy’s 10 Singles. But in the finals Skillman lost 5-3, 4-2 to the No. 2 seed from Mount Pleasant.

— Caroline Brothers won her first round 6-0, 6-1 over the No. 2 seed from Charleston and then won 7-5,   6-7, (1-0) over a player from Bluffton in the Girl’s 12 Singles Green Dot. But in the finals she lost 6-1, 6-3 to the No. 1 seed from Mount Pleasant.  

Fripp Island

The Fripp Island Spring Clay Court Championships were wrapped up March 4-6 at the Fripp Island Racquet Club. This Level 3 sanctioned event had 125 players including one from the Grand Strand.

Her results were:

— Joni Walls and her West Virginia partner won their first round 6-2, 7-6 over a Beaufort team and then lost 6-1, 6-2 to a team from Greenville /Simpsonville in the NTRP Women’s 4.0 Doubles.

Grande Dunes Mixer  

The Grande Dunes Tennis Club will have a Mixed Round Robin Mixer tonight, March 11 from 6 - 8 p.m. Beverages will be provided but please bring an appetizer. Cost is $20 members and $30 nonmembers.

Prestwick Tennis Club will continue to have their two tournaments, the Prestwick Country Club Beach Blast Junior Tournament – SC L3 in June and the Prestwick Southern NTRP & Family Southern Championships SC L 1 in September.

Local upcoming tournaments

The Mercom Junior Classic at Stables Park will be held March 18-20 at the WRTC at Stables Park in Pawleys Island. This Level 3 sanctioned tournament offers singles and doubles for all juniors up to 18 years old.

Entry fee is $43.50 for one event and $46 for two events. Deadline is March 13.
