The A. Foster McKissick Tennis Tournament (STA 150 PT) – SC L 2 was completed March 10-13 at the Litchfield Racquet Club in Pawleys Island. This Level 2 sanctioned event had 90 players including 49 local adults. Last year this event had 115 players including 66 local adults.

Results of the tournament were:

— Men’s 55 Singles: Troy Marguglio (Moncks Corner) def. Tom Meigs (Seneca) 6-4, 7-5 in the finals. In the consolation, Daniel Greene (Charlotte) def. Frank Heindel (Mount Pleasant) 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.

— Men’s 65 Singles: Andy Steingold (Summerville) def. the No. 1 seeded Graham Snook 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the finals. In the consolation, Cecil Martin (Cary, N.C.) def. Bob Seward 6-0, 6-1 in a match where the score was not indicative of the outcome. 

— Men’s 70 Singles: No. 1 seed Richard Shipman (Concord, N.C.) def. Jimmy Washington (Chapel Hill, N.C.) 6-1, 6-4 in the finals. In the consolation, Paul Feuerstein (Blythewood) def. No. 2 seed Ron Charron (Mount Pleasant) in the finals 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

— Men’s 75 Singles: Richard Weathers (Daniel Island) def. Paul Vander Berg (Bluffton) in the finals 6-3, 6-2. In the consolation, Charles Burns (Isle of Palms) was awarded the title when the No. 1 seed Ben Varn (Inman) withdrew in the finals.

— NTRP Men’s 3.0 Singles: Ernesto Nicastro (Clinton, Pa.) won the round-robin event with three players. In that same event, locals Larry Mercado def. Chris Olds 6-4, 6-4.    

— NTRP Men’s 3.5 Singles: Gregg Hooks was awarded the title when his Hilton Head Island opponent withdrew due to illness in the finals.

— NTRP Men’s 4.0 Singles: Kevin Bryant (Savannah, Ga.) def. Phillip Edwards (Bolivia, N.C.) in the finals 6-1, 6-3. In the consolation, No. 2 seed Guillermo Fenoglio (Mount Pleasant) def. the No. 1 seed Gregory Wheeling 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the finals.

— NTRP Women’s 3.5 Singles: Kelly Bryant (Wrightsville Beach, N.C.) def. Shanelle Balfour 6-2, 6-2 in the finals.

— NTRP Women’s 4.5 Singles: in the round-robin event with four players, Tabatha Waddill (Summerville) came in first winning all three of her matches, Diofra Azucenas won two and Allison Stanford won one match.       

— Women’s 75 Singles: Robi Poston (Daniel Island) def. Shirley Taylor 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.

— NTRP Combined Mixed 6.0 Doubles: In the round-robin event with three teams, Jessica Miller/Chris Olds came in first winning both of their matches and Larry Mercado/Joann Binkley (Hilton Head) finished second winning one match.

— NTRP Combined Mixed 8.0 Doubles: Kelly Bryant (Wrightsville Beach)/Kevin Bryant (Savannah) def. Shirley Taylor/Tom Meigs (Seneca) in the finals 6-3, 7-5. In the consolation, Wendy Bledsoe (Wilmington)/Phillip Edwards (Bolivia) def. Janice Honymar (Westfield, N.J.)/John Mancini (Westfield) in the finals 6-1, 6-3.

— NTRP Combined Mixed 9.0 Doubles: In the round-robin event with four teams, Tabatha Waddill (Summerville)/Andy Steingold (Summerville) came in first winning all three of their matches, Amanda Gallup/Will Hudson won twice and Caitlin Negethon/Kurtis Caster won one match.

— Men’s 65 Doubles: No. 1 seeds Fritz Gildemeister/Graham Snook def. Alfons Cadusch (Anderson)/Tony Gossett (Lexington) in the finals 6-2, 6-2. In the consolation, Leonard Adams/Andrew Hallock were awarded the title. 

— Men’s 70 Doubles: Dickie Lester/Paul Feuerstein def. Don Coveleski/Michael Sabia 6-1, 6-2 in the finals.

— Men’s 75 Doubles: In the round-robin event with three teams, Charles Burns (Isle of Palms)/Paul Vander Berg (Bluffton) came in first winning two matches and Tom Foster (Woodruff)/Ben Varn (Inman) won one match.

— NTRP Men’s 3.5 Doubles: In the round-robin event with three teams, Bruce Gallup/Gregg Hooks came in first winning two matches and Blaine Harvey/Gray Harvey (High Point, NC) won one match.        

— NTRP Men’s 4.0 Doubles: Jay Drosieko/Tim McCoy def. Tom Connors/David Nelson 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in the finals. In the consolation, Cheevin Gardner/Robert Smith def. John Jacobus/Peter Lisowski 6-2, 6-2 in the finals.

— NTRP Women’s 3.5 Doubles: Patti Horton/Genie Matthews def. Jessica Miller/Mandy McKenzie 6-0, 6-0 in the finals.

— NTRP Women’s 4.0 Doubles: In the round-robin event with three teams, Holly Cox/Janice Honymar (Westfield) came in first winning two matches and Carrie Amick/Caitlin Negethon won one match.        

— NTRP Women’s 4.5 Doubles:  In the round-robin event with four teams, Holly Cox/Tabatha Waddill (Summerville) def. Caitlin Negethon/Allison Stanford 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to win the event.  

Snook plays Seniors

The Raymond James Super Senior Grand Prix at the St. Petersburg Country Club was completed Feb. 29 – March 6 in St. Petersburg, Fla. This USTA Super Category II event had 274 players including one from the Grand Strand.

His results were:

Graham Snook, seeded No. 9 in the Men’s 65 Singles lost his first match 6-2, 6-3 to a player from Roslindale, Mass., in the main draw of 64 players. 

In the Men’s 60 Doubles, Graham Snook and his partner from Bradenton, Fla., won their first round 6-0,  4-6, (10-8) over a team from Orlando/Pompano Beach, Fla., but then lost the following round 6-1, 6-0 to the No. 1 seeds from Houston, Texas/Mornington, Victoria.   

  

Charleston Challenger

The Lowcountry Challenger was completed March 11-13 at the Charleston Tennis Center in Charleston. This Level 4 sanctioned event had 67 players including two from the Grand Strand.

Their results were:   

— Nick LeFever lost in the first round 6-1, 6-2 to a player from Walterboro in the Boy’s 16 Singles. In the consolation, LeFever won 6-3, 2-6, (10-2) over a player from Daniel Island and then lost 7-6, 7-5 to a Summerville player. 

 In the Boy’s 16 Doubles, Nick LeFever and his Moncks Corner partner won both their matches to win the round-robin event with three teams.

— Caroline Brothers won her first round 6-3, 3-6, (10-7) over a player from Mount Pleasant in the Girl’s 12 Singles. In the following round Brothers won 6-3, 6-3 over the No. 2 seed from Bluffton to reach the finals where she lost 6-0, 6-0 to a player from Durham, N.C.

Hendrix scores

The Rising Stars at Lexington County Tennis Complex was completed March 12 in Lexington. This entry level one-day event had 26 players and one from the Grand Strand.

His results were:

— Tucker Hendrix won four matches and lost one in the Boy’s 12 Singles.

Prestwick news

Prestwick Tennis Club is now on Facebook.

Its Playmakers Tennis Academy is going strong 4-6 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

The Dunes Sparks Toyota Junior Open will be held April 15-17 at the Dunes Tennis Club in Myrtle Beach. This Level 3 sanctioned event offers singles for juniors 18 and under.
