The Conway girls’ golf team got a chance to meet and learn from one of the best this week when CHS alum and accomplished LPGA golfer Kristy McPherson stopped by for a practice session at Shaftesbury Glen, where she fielded several questions from the Lady Tigers.
McPherson, who joined the LPGA Tour in 2007 and recently completed her ninth year, played golf on the boys’ team at Conway High School before graduating in 1999 and becoming an SEC champion at the University of South Carolina. McPherson joined the Futures Tour and became a professional in 2003.
McPherson told the Lady Tigers that playing with the boys was a big motivating factor for her in high school.
“I’m glad there’s a women’s team now,” she said. “It was pretty cool when you got to play number one on a guy’s team.”
The competitive McPherson played on the same CHS team with her brother Kevin, who is the men’s golf coach at Coastal Carolina University.
“My brother was a year older than me and I wanted to beat him every week,” she said. “If my brother beat me I was going to beat out there on the golf course until dark.”
