Christian Salzer of Sumter is the 57th S.C. Golf Association Junior Champion after shooting a three-day, even par total of 216 at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
Salzer put together rounds of 71, 76 and 69 to win by a shot. The course was set at 6,730 yards and a par of 72.
“I made the turn at one under and got it to four [on the day] then I made bogey,” Salzer said. “I played good and putted really well on the final three holes."
Several local players competed in the premier event, with three making the two-day cut.
In the boys 13-14 age division, Holden Grigg of Myrtle Beach shot 83-79-82--244 to lead local golfers in that division. He finished seventh.
Keegan Vaugh, also of Myrtle Beach, made the cut with a pair of 82s but did not play the final round, according to an SCGA news release.
Patrick Golden of Murrells Inlet was the lone local golfer in the boys 15-17 division to make the cut. He shot rounds of 75-76-73--224 to tie for fifth.
The low eight scores of the tournament automatically qualify for the 40th Annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Team Matches to be played at Berkeley Hall Club in Bluffton. These coveted Matches are the longest running interstate matches in the country.
The top eight players also qualify for the 40th SC-GA team matches to be held at Berkeley Hall on July 24-25. Charlie Rymer, Lucas Glover, Tommy Biershenk, Matt Hendrix, and Mark Anderson are all past champions.
The field was cut to the low 59 and ties in the 15-17 division and low nine scores in 13-14.
Sixty-eight players made the cut on the number. The cut line was 16 over par 160.
