Pine Lakes Country Club

The South Carolina Golf Association has released its 2016 tournament schedule, and this year there are more events at Grand Strand golf courses.

Pine Lakes Country Club in Myrtle Beach is serving as the host site for the sixth annual Carolinas Net Amateur Championship Nov. 12-13.

The two-day tournament is classified by the SCGA as a major tournament, and is being cosponsored by the Carolinas Golf Association and Women’s S.C. Golf Association.

Last year’s event was held at Pinehurst No. 1. The competition consists of 36 holes of net stroke play using 100 percent of handicap.

The Tradition Club in Pawleys Island is once again hosting the SCGA Tournament of Champions.

The 20th annual event will be contested Jan. 23-24. It returns to The Tradition Club in 2017 as well, according to the SCGA website.

The most notable event being hosted locally is the 85th annual South Carolina Amateur Championship, which is being held Aug. 4-7 at the exclusive DeBordieu Country Club between Pawleys Island and Georgetown.

Contestants must either be exempt or qualify at one of four qualifying locations.

The Reserve Club at Pawleys Island is also a qualifying site for the 2017 USGA Amateur Four Ball. The qualifying event is slated Sept. 29.

SCGA has released its 2016 one-day, senior one-day and 40-plus schedules, though no events are being contested along the Grand Strand.

The one-day events provide affordable competition, though solo entries are traditionally discouraged.

It generally costs $14 per person, per event plus the host club’s cart fee. The first event is Sunday, Feb. 7 at the Oak Point course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, and events continue most weekends through Sunday, Dec. 4.

The closest one-day event to Myrtle Beach is Sunday, May 22 at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. Other events nearby have been scheduled in Sumter, Orangeburg and Columbia.

A partial 40-plus schedule has been released. Events are geared toward players ages 40-54, though players 55 and above are welcome and usually play from a shorter set of tees.

Forty-plus events are considered generally more prestigious than one-day events, with entry fees around $70 and winning scores at even par or a few strokes under.

The first 40-plus event will be held March 14 at The River Golf Club in North Augusta.

The closest event to Myrtle Beach is Sept. 12 at Florence Country Club, followed by an Oct. 17 tournament at Rivertowne Country Club in Mt. Pleasant.

The 2015 event at Rivertowne was canceled due to flooding from the October storms. April and May tournament dates remain open and are expected to be filled at some point in the future.
