Socastee advances to third round

Socastee High freshman Niko Levy, left, fights for the ball during Thursday's playoff match against Cane Bay. Socastee won 5-0.

The Socastee High boys soccer team crushed Cane Bay 5-0 Thursday in the second round of the 5A playoffs.

Josh Mackie scored three goals on the Braves’ home turf and had one assist. Javier Pinos also notched two goals of his own.

“The boys worked really hard and as the game went on we got more rhythm and kept better possession, which was great,” said Socastee coach Byron Owen, whose squad was up 3-0 by halftime.

Keeper John Cetin recorded eight saves and Zach Elsibai, Aaron Norton-Baker and Christian Newman each chipped in an assist.

“The biggest thing is we finished our chances,” Owen said. “We created some opportunities and we put them away."

The Braves will play at home again Saturday in the third round of the Class 5A SCHSL playoffs against Dutch Fork. The Silver Foxes defeated James Island Thursday.

“That’s going to be a really tough game,” Owen said of this weekend’s match. “They're one of the top teams in the state so it’s going to be a close, tight game.”
