The Myrtle Beach Seahawks saw their 2017 season come to an end on the last play of the game Friday night against the Lower Richland Diamond Hornets.
The Diamond Hornets took the lead for the first time when it counted--connecting on a 50 yard "Hail Mary" pass to the end zone as time expired, winning 34-31 and advancing to the third round of the state 4A playoffs.
Friday night's contest was a game of two distinct halves, the first belonging to Myrtle Beach, the second to Lower Richland.
After the Diamond Hornets stopped the Seahawks' first drive with a goal line interception, Myrtle Beach regrouped and took control, reeling off 24 points in the first half and keeping Lower Richland off the scoreboard.
But coach Rodney Barr rallied his troops and the Diamond Hornets took to the air in the second half, outscoring the Seahawks 34-7 for the win. Quarterback Tevaughn Higgins continuously found open receivers on long passes including launching the winning toss into a crowd in the end zone with just six seconds left in the game for the win.
One highlight from the game was Jermani Green's surpassing the 1,000 rushing mark for the season. Green, a junior, will be a key element for coach Mickey Wilson's squad next year.
