A strong showing against Appalachian State wasn’t enough to overpower the Mountaineers as Coastal Carolina fell 56-37 on the road Saturday, according to a CCU news release.
The loss leaves the Chanticleers with a 3-2 record (0-1 Sun Belt Conference) and ends their three-game winning streak.
Coastal quarterback Fred Payton tallied 240 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a pair of scores. Running back CJ Marable rushed for 95 yards and a TD.
Lightning delayed the game for two hours in the opening quarter, but it couldn’t slow down the scoring once play resumed. The Chanticleers put up 21 first half points in their Sun Belt opener.
After an explosive first half, including a barrage of scoring in the waning minutes, App State led Coastal 35-21.
The Mountaineers extended that lead in the second half and Coastal just couldn’t match the offensive firepower. App State is now 4-0 this season.
Coastal has a bye before getting back into Sun Belt play Oct. 12 against Georgia State. That game will be played at Brooks Stadium.
