Coastal Carolina catcher Matt Beaird, a junior, hits a home run in Saturday’s game against Appalachian State.

There will be no back-to-back championships.

Despite winning the regular season title in the Sun Belt Conference, Coastal Carolina did not make the 64-team tournament field announced by the NCAA Monday.

Coastal (37-19-1) would have needed an at-large berth to reach the tournament after falling 7-5 to Texas State on Friday.

Inclement weather shortened the tournament from a double elimination event to a competition where one loss would send a team home.

South Alabama, the Sun Belt tournament champion, was the only team from the conference selected for the tournament.

This was Coastal’s first season in the Sun Belt. Last year, when the Chants won the College World Series, they were part of the Big South Conference.
