Coastal Carolina routed UMass 62-28 Saturday.
It was the first time since 2013 that the Chanticleers scored at least 60 points.
Coastal Carolina opened the floodgates with a CJ Marable touchdown with just over 10 minutes to go in the first quarter. The Chants were unable to tack on more points in their second possession of the game as Fred Payton’s pass was intercepted and returned inside the CCU 15-yard line.
While UMass did tie things up on the ensuing drive, the Chants regained the lead at the end of the second quarter thanks to another Marable score.
Marable finished with 100 yards rushing on 16 carries. It was his third straight 100-yard rushing game. This stretch is the most consecutive 100-yard rushing games since De’Angelo Henderson had five straight back in 2015.
The second quarter was when the Chanticleers unloaded on the Minutemen.
Reese White started the scoring barrage with a 24-yard touchdown reception from Bryce Carpenter to make it 21-7 with 9:21 remaining in the first half.
UMass cut the lead to a touchdown just three minutes later, but the Chanticleers would score three touchdowns in the final five minutes to make it 42-14 at the half. Jacquez Hairston scored two of those three touchdowns. Hairston finished with 40 yards on five carries.
The 42 points in one half tied a school record for most points in a single half. The other time it happened was in CCU’s first season back in 2003 against North Greenville.
Carpenter threw his second touchdown pass of the day with a 13-yard strike to Aaron Bedgood with just over 10 minutes left in the third quarter.
The Chanticleers kept at it as Reese White got his second touchdown of the game with a 35-yard touchdown run with 6:35 left in the third. White finished with 54 yards on six carries on the day.
UMass ended the third quarter with a 30-yard touchdown pass to make it a 35-point deficit going into the final quarter of play.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Coastal eclipsed 60 points when Anthony McAfee found the end zone for the first time in his career to make it 62-21.
UMass tacked on one more touchdown late in the fourth to make it 62-28.
The 62 points were the most since Coastal scored 66 against VMI on Oct. 26, 2013. The record for most points in a game is 71 when the Chants defeated Mansfield 71-8.
The Chants are now 3-1 and head to Appalachian State next week to open Sun Belt Conference play. Coastal has never beaten Appalachian State in their five matchups.
Kickoff between the Chants and App State is slated for 3:30 p.m. Sept. 28.
