Should cell towers be allowed in public rights-of-way?

The S.C. House of Representatives recently passed a “wireless facilities deployment act” that allows telecommunication companies to use righta of way without the restrictions cities have enacted. The bill is in the S.C. Senate Judiciary Committee for further debate. The bill will take away the city’s power to limit how many and what kind of businesses use public rights of way, Myrtle Beach attorney Thomas Ellenburg recently told city council. Using photoshopped images, City Manager John Pedersen showed the council what Ocean Boulevard might look like with numerous telecommunication poles lining the area between the street and the sidewalk.
