Free throws can be costly

Struggling offense sinks Tigers

Sometimes your best is just not good enough.

The Conway defense played about as well as it could this past Friday night when it held explosive West Florence to three touchdowns and a field goal.``

However, the Conway offense managed only 13 points, and the Tigers came up short of a big upset for the second week in a row.

The Tigers held West Florence to a season low 26 points. That’s impressive considering the Knights scored more than 50 points in seven of 10 games. Unfortunately, the Conway offense mustered only 13 points, a season low allowed by the West Florence defense.

Friday night’s game was a virtual repeat of the Conway-Carolina Forest game two weeks ago. The Tigers held the Panthers to a season low 20 points. It wasn’t enough as Carolina Forest held Conway to seven points. That was the least Carolina Forest gave up in a game all year, a number the Panthers matched this past Friday at Socastee.

Simply put, the Conway offense will have to do a better job if the Tigers hope to spring an upset tomorrow night at River Bluff.

“We struggle on offense,” Conway Coach Carlton Terry said. “We do some good things and then we turn the ball over. We just have to execute better on offense to have a chance at winning in the playoffs.”

I turned in a 6-1 record on my predictions this past week. Here we go again. For the record, Green Sea Floyds made the Class 1A playoffs, but the Trojans have a bye this week.

River Bluff over Conway

Conway and River Bluff have met numerous times in other sports, but this will be the first time the Tigers and Gators have played on the gridiron. Conway’s first visit to the Swamp will likely result in a loss. Gators-24 Tigers-14.

Aynor over Battery Creek

I’m not sure three-win teams (Conway) belong in the playoffs. Neither does Battery Creek and its two victories. Blue Jackets-49 Dolphins-14.

Carolina Forest over Lexington

Coach Marc Morris and his Panthers have an excellent chance to advance to the second round. Panthers-35 Wildcats-28.

Myrtle Beach over Dreher

The Seahawks gave up 70 points to Hartsville after allowing a grand total of 47 all season heading into the game. Dreher is no Hartsville. Seahawks-45 Blue Devils-14.

South Aiken over North Myrtle Beach

The Chiefs are capable of upsetting the Thoroughbreds. South Aiken-21 North Myrtle Beach-17.

Wade Hampton over Loris

The Red Devils have the homefield advantage over the Lions. That may be the difference in a close game. Wade Hampton-21 Loris-14.
