Years ago the Gaithers sang a song entitled “Redemption Draweth Nigh”…
“Years of time have come and gone since I first heard it told how Jesus would come again someday. If back then it seemed so real, then I just can’t help but feel how much closer His coming is today.
“Wars and strife on every hand and violence fills our land; still some people doubt He’ll come again. But the Word of God is true; He’ll redeem His chosen few. Don’t lose hope, soon Christ Jesus will descend.
“Signs of the times are everywhere. There’s a brand new feeling in the air. Keep your eyes upon the eastern sky. Life up your heads, redemption draweth nigh.”
Signs of the times are everywhere. All through the Bible we have proof that Jesus came, died, rose again, ascended to heaven and will return.
Good men and women may differ on exactly when and how this will occur. But you cannot read the Bible without the understanding of what Jesus plainly said in John 14: “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to myself, that where I am, there you may be also.”
The early church members believed this was an event right at hand. But we’re told that no one knows the day or the hour. Paul told the Thessalonian church the order of His coming and the rising of the dead and living Christians. And in the last chapter of the last book of the Bible, Jesus testifies three times “Behold, I come quickly.”
I certainly would not profess to set a time for this momentous event, but I believe Jesus will come and I believe it could be at any time. Paul told Timothy that in the last days perilous times will come. Get your Bible; read II Timothy 3:1-9 and see if that doesn’t describe our world and nation today. And we’re told that in this time, even members of the church will fall away, something we see all too often.
As I write this today, I have been watching the news of the tragic shootings in El Paso and Dayton. A story about back-to-school shopping showed bulletproof backpacks. The news is filled with political rancor; everyone is offended; everyone has the right to his/her own opinion.
Another story told of a 4-year-old whose mother attempted to sell her to a pimp.
Locally, domestic violence, crime, drugs and killings are commonplace. Frankly, I can’t see any of it getting any better.
Across the world there is famine, disease and religious genocide…yes, I know this type of thing has been going on almost since the beginning of time. But it certainly seems to me that these may be signs of the times. Either the Lord’s coming or mankind’s slow societal suicide.
In 2010, Erwin Lutzer, Pastor of the historic Moody Church in Chicago wrote a book called “When A Nation Forgets God.” What an indictment on any so-called civilized or Christian nation; what an indictment against America.
As the Gaither’s sing, “Lift up your heads.” We must not give up; we must not believe Satan is winning or will win. We must not forget that God is still on the throne.
