MURRELLS INLET—Mary Gold Mitchell Wilkes departed this earthly world on Aug.11.

She was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband, Herbert W. Wilkes Jr. and daughter Mary Margaret Wilkes Karraker.

Mrs. Wilkes served in many roles over her long and adventurous life. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and distinguished educator.

Mrs. Wilkes was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Alpha Eta Chapter, Columbia, including a term as chapter president. In 1982, Mrs. Wilkes was honored as the S.C. Home Economics Association Teacher of the Year.

She was a member of Belin Memorial United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet. Mrs. Wilkes had a courageous spirit and traveled extensively during her life. She was a master gardener and frequented Brookgreen Gardens where she enjoyed watching children playing as well as the beautiful flora and fauna.

Deeply grieving her death, yet celebrating her life, are daughter Mary Jean Wilkes Rice; sons-in-law Coolidge H. Rice Jr. and Mark H. Karraker; two beloved granddaughters and a great-grandson.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Wilkes was blessed with so many loving, kind, and faithful family and friends.

A graveside service was held Aug. 14, 2019 at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery.
