Atlantic City Sliders John Randazzo

John Randazzo, 55, opened Atlantic City Sliders on Feb. 6, 2019.

A new 1950s-style hamburger joint has opened in North Myrtle Beach.

Atlantic City Sliders opened in early February in the same shopping center as the North Myrtle Beach Food Lion. The diner serves burger and cheeseburger sliders, pulled pork sliders, and cheesesteak sliders, among other options.

New Jersey native John Randazzo, 55, opened the restaurant after moving to the area three years ago. He came here after a decade of vacationing to the Grand Strand with his sons.

“In New Jersey, there’s places that have strictly sliders,” he said. “You have one of the oldest fast food places in the country, White Castle. Up in New Jersey you have one in every town. First thing I noticed when I got down here was you guys don’t have sliders down here. Some restaurants have them on their appetizer menu, but other than that, you can’t find them.”

Randazzo said he spent 27 years renovating hotels while in New Jersey. He also operated a coffee roastery and would make sliders for his sons’ football and wrestling teams.

“They used to beg me to open a restaurant, but I was too busy with my business up there," he said. "So when I came down here, I decided that’s what I’m going to do."

Although Randazzo’s career wasn’t in the restaurant business, food was a big part of his childhood.

“I’m an Italian from northern Jersey,” he said. “Food, it was a passion. Everybody was passionate about food as I was growing up. When I had my children, I carried it on another generation. That passion is what I think people taste in the meal.”

Randazzo said he wasn’t sure if his New Jersey slider concept would work in North Myrtle, but people seem to be welcoming it.

“I never let a person leave this dining room without asking ‘How was everything?’” he said. “And I don’t just get a ‘Fine, thank you.’ I get “Oh my God, this was great. We’ll be back.’ Every day I get people coming in saying their neighbors suggested they come here and it’s just been very rewarding seeing everybody coming back with positive feedback.”

Atlantic City Sliders is located at 1000 U.S. 17 North. It’s open Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The store is closed Sunday.
