The brother-in-law of Atlantic Beach Mayor Jake Evans – and the husband of former Mayor Irene Armstrong – was arrested Thursday afternoon in Atlantic Beach.
Atlantic Beach police charged William Armstrong, 64, with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, failure to stop for a blue light and threatening the life, family or person of a public employee, according to jail records.
Jail records show that Armstrong was still incarcerated Friday afternoon, and bail was set at a combined $2,257 for all four charges.
An Atlantic Beach police report said that Armstrong flagged down the arresting officer around 12:30 p.m. Thursday near Atlantic Beach Town Hall.
The report says Armstrong became “disorderly in public by shouting loudly out of his vehicle window and using profanity in his statements.”
The officer then made a traffic stop on Armstrong on 30th Ave. South and advised him that he was under arrest, at which point Armstrong said he would not get out of the truck, rolled up his windows and drove off, according to the report.
The officer then pursued Armstrong and arrested him inside the town hall, the report said.
The report's narrative did not give a reason for the initial disorderly conduct.
Former Mayor Irene Armstrong, reached by phone Friday afternoon, said she didn't know anything about the situation.
Mayor Jake Evans could not be reached for comment.
