The company hosts ‘Walk with a Doc’ on the second Saturday of each month, with attendees gathering at the Grand Park Athletic Complex in The Market Common.

Each event, which includes a roughly one-mile walk, offers advice from a doctor and looks to promote fitness.

“It’s very, very helpful,” said Mona Dutterer, who walked with her husband Bob Saturday, adding she once received some beneficial advice at one of the walks from a cardiologist. She likes being able to speak with a medical professionals at the events free of charge.

Art Borodin sported a New York Giants-themed holiday hat while strolling the complex. The 70-year-old walks at The Market Common and attends the ongoing event regularly.

A diabetic, he enjoys hearing from doctors in different fields and the chance to meet others as well as being able to ask questions.

Dr. Philip Nicol, medical director of Tidelands Health’s diabetes center, spoke on the disease at the most recent walk, saying it can be reversed. He also joined walkers in their march.

The physician said while being active helps, the key to preventing and treating diabetes is watching one’s intake of carbohydrates. Diabetics are also encouraged to keep their blood pressures and cholesterol levels low.

“Diabetics die from heart disease and strokes so that’s what we have to try and prevent,” he said. The doctor added diabetes is common in the southeastern part of the United States.

The event, which also offers blood pressure checks, is part of an initiative from Tidelands Health, which includes the building of walking trails being at its campuses, according to spokesman Carl Lindquist.

“Walking is one of the lowest impact types of exercise, but it can have a significant benefit to our health,” he said.
