For years, one of the big events that took place each April was the Loris Spring Festival and Outdoor Expo.
This year, there will be a festival, but it will have a new name and will take place a little later in the year.
Samantha Norris, executive director of the Loris Chamber of Commerce, says the first Loris Heritage Festival will take place June 1.
She said when the spring festival began, it featured a lot of flowers and plants, but it was too early for good farmer’s markets because they usually do not get started until May.
Another problem was the number of events that take place at the same time the spring festival used to occur.
“When we started the spring festival 10 years ago, there was not much else going on. Now you have lots and lots of events, so the spring festival was not growing,” Norris said.
Things taking place in April include a major flower show in Florence, the Socastee Heritage Festival, the Dragon Boat Race in Myrtle Beach.
“All of that is on the same day we would hold the spring festival,” she explained.
Norris said the Heritage Festival is going to be worth the wait.
“Yes, it will be similar to the spring festival, but it will have a lot more to do and see. It will have farmer’s markets, arts and crafts, we will have some commercial vendors,” Norris said.
She said there will be an antique car and tractor show and she is also hoping to include vintage vendors.
There will also be an area to showcase the heritage of the City of Loris. Norris said since is the first year, that area may be small, but she expects it to grow in upcoming years.
