A house belonging to Loris Mayor Todd Harrelson was heavily damaged by fire this past week.
The fire was reported at around 4:30 a.m. June 27, according to Loris Fire Marshal Lt. Robert Rudelitch. He said flames were coming through the roof when firefighters arrived.
The Horry County Fire Department assisted with the firefighting efforts.
Mayor Harrelson said the house is one he rents out but has been vacant in recent weeks.
He lives across the street from the burned house. He said he was awakened by people walking outside. Not long after, someone knocked on Harrelson’s door telling him about the fire.
Harrelson said he was told by another neighbor they smelled something burning in the area around 2 a.m. -- more than two hours before flames were visible.
It is believed, Harrelson said, the fire started with some wiring in the attic.
