The City of Loris is collecting school supplies that will be distributed to children during a special event next month.
According to Loris City Clerk Kenya Wright, the supply collections began June 24 and will continue until Aug. 1.
Then, on Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., a back to school event will be held at the public safety building where backpacks containing the supplies will be distributed to the students.
“We will have tents set up and our hope is to have a dunking booth and a slime station as well,” she said.
Wright said any donations will be greatly appreciated. They are collecting any type of school supplies such as paper, pencils, pens, notebooks and more. One thing Wright said is especially needed are ear buds, which all students are now required to have as part of their supplies.
“We ask that the donations be new,” she said.
Wright said if someone is unable to donate supplies, monetary donations are also being accepted which will be used to purchase things not received by donors.
This is the first time the city has done such a supply drive. Wright said it was the idea of the administrative assistants who work in her office.
“Last year we talked about doing an angel tree or something like that but were unable to do anything because of the storms,” Wright said.
She said if this supply drive is a success, the city will likely do a similar event for Christmas items beginning in November.
“We are strictly working off of donations because we did not put anything in the budget for this,” Wright said. “All city employees in the administration building have donated their time.”
