A mental subject stole an Horry County Fire Rescue ambulance April 28 and drove it around a hospital parking lot in Myrtle Beach.

Robert Tyler Reeves, 32, of Myrtle Beach, has been charged with first degree assault and battery, kidnapping and grand larceny $10,000 or more in connection with the incident, said Horry County Police spokeswoman Mikayla Moskov in an email.

Horry County Police responded to a location on Blue River Court in the Carolina Forest area around 7:10 a.m. for a mental subject call, according to a news release.

The individual was taken into emergency protective custody and transported to Grand Strand Medical Center, where the subject was placed into the care of hospital staff.

The subject presented a threat to hospital staff and security was called before a foot chase occurred, the release said. The person ended up exiting the hospital near the ambulance bay.

The subject at about 9:47 a.m. stole an Horry County Fire Rescue ambulance that was parked in the bay that had two individuals and a medic in the back.

The subject drove the ambulance around the hospital parking lot, "causing damage to property along the way," the release said.

At 9:52 a.m., the subject was taken into custody by a Myrtle Beach police officer.

No injuries were reported.
