A 30-year-old North Carolina man died early Sunday when he lost control of his motorcycle and wrecked in Horry County, authorities said.

Matthew Turbeville of Chadbourn, North Carolina, succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash, which happened when he was traveling on S.C. 9, according to a news release from Horry County Deputy Coroner Patty Bellamy.

Around 2 a.m., Turbeville was heading north on a 2001 Harley Davidson when his bike went off the right side of the highway near Log Cabin Road, said Lance Cpl. Matt Southern with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Turbeville was thrown from the bike and died at the scene, Southern said. State troopers are continuing to investigate the crash.

Southern said Turbeville was not wearing a helmet.
