A 34-year-old man has been charged in connection with a deadly assault in the Loris area, authorities said.
William Richard Kelly Schultz faces a voluntary manslaughter charge, according to a news release from the Horry County Police Department.
Horry County Coroner Robert Edge identified the victim as 62-year-old Steven Davis, who died Tuesday morning in Grand Strand Medical Center.
Around 10 p.m. Monday, police were called to a location on Quartermaster Drive for reports of an aggravated assault. Horry County court records list Schultz’ address as a location on Quartermaster Drive.
Authorities found a person, later identified as Davis, unconscious and severely beaten.
An investigation revealed the victim produced a handgun when he and Schultz were arguing, the release said. An arrest warrant said a series of arguments between the two were all provoked by Schultz.
Police said a physical struggle started after the victim produced a gun.
Schultz lunged at the victim and disarmed him before he knocked him to the ground, according to the warrant.
He continued to attack the victim until he was unconscious, according to the warrant.
The victim was transported to a hospital.
Schultz remained jailed as of Wednesday morning. Bond was set at $30,000.
