Overcome with emotion, Greg and Pamela Drake of Wilmington, North Carolina, collect themselves after watching their daughter Hannah Drake surf for the first time in the Wheel to Surf event in Cherry Grove Beach on Saturday, May 20, 2023. There will be an adaptive surf competition in the Anderson Estes Surf Competition at the same location by the pier on Sunday. Other Wheel to Surf events this year include Aug. 26 in Surfside Beach and Oct. 7 at the Cherry Grove Pier. Wheel to Surf is the flagship event for the Adaptive Surf Project which is a nonprofit with a mission of helping those with disabilities surf. Most Sundays, folks gather at the Cherry Grove Pier in informal sessions for adaptive surfers. Photo by Janet Morgan / janet.morgan@myhorrynews.com

Wheel to Surf marks its tenth year on the Grand Strand with an event in Cherry Grove Beach on Saturday, May 20, 2023. Coastal Adaptive Sports also offers several activities that include basketball played at the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic Center, travel to national competitions, local social events and adaptive bicycle rides. Some goals of Coastal Adaptive Sports and Adaptive Surf Project are to have wheelchairs at every pier in the state, as well as ramps and matting at as many beaches as possible.
