The 2019 Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk Myrtle Beach event was held Saturday, May 11, at The Market Common. The event benefitted the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and its programs. Stephen Siller was a New York City firefighter who died in the line of duty on September 11, 2001, according to the nonprofit organization’s website. The organization's efforts include providing fallen service members’ spouses and young children a new, mortgage-free home and paying off the remaining mortgages for families of firefighters or police officers killed in the line of duty. The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk Series was created to retrace the final steps of Siller, who ran through the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel to the Twin Towers with his gear on. It also pays homage to first responders and service members who died in the line of duty. Among those who participated Saturday in Myrtle Beach were local police and emergency personnel. More than $10,000 has been raised, according to Jesse Patrick of Myrtle Beach won the 5K with a time of 18:30.
