Horry County 4-H has a lot of exciting upcoming programs for the spring and summer.

Children, ages 5-19, are eligible to become 4-H members. There are seven clubs that typically meet once a month and cover specific topics according to the interest of the members.

Horry County 4-H has recently opened its animal projects for the year. Children who sign up receive the project animal in the spring, raise it through the summer and can show it at the Eastern Carolina Agricultural Fair in Florence in the fall.

These projects provide youth a fun and hands-on learning experience that develops life skills and teaches valuable information about properly caring for an animal. Animal projects available in this region include goats, rabbits, chickens/pullets and hogs. Children can show a beef or dairy heifer as well as a horse, but we currently do not have any local 4-H shows for that. This year the deadline to sign up for the rabbit and chicken/pullet project is March 21. The deadline to sign up for the goat project is April 15 and the deadline to sign up for the hog project will be announced.

Horry County plans to pilot a new Dog Project this year. The deadline to register is March 21. Participants will attend monthly meetings and dog trainings. They will complete a dog curriculum and project book. There will be a small-scale show in the fall where they will be judged on several different components and become eligible to win prizes.

Volunteers are needed in the 4-H program. Horry County 4-H will be holding a Volunteer Interest Meeting today from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the Horry County Extension Office. Information will be provided on how to become a 4-H volunteer and about all of the opportunities available. Dinner will be served. Space is limited. Call Miracle Lewis at (843) 365-6715, ext. 126 or email to llewis2@clemson.edu to learn about other projects.
