Little River Medical Center will be offering assistance to area residents who are interested in applying for health insurance through the new Health Insurance Market-place effective Oct. 1.
HHS announced millions of dollars in grants were awarded in July to community health centers around the country to provide outreach and enrollment assistance. Little River Medical Center received funding to employ and train outreach educators to enroll as many of the uninsured as possible.
“Having trained, face-to-face assistance in enrollment from trusted resources at local health centers means that more people will get the help they need,” said Mary Wakefield, PhD, RN, of the Health Resources and Services Administration.
According to a 2012 report by USC Institute for Families in Society, Horry County has South Carolina’s highest percentage of uninsured residents with 31.4 percent uninsured. Community health centers, like Little River Medical Center, will play a critical role in making certain that individuals and families with no insurance will connect to the new health care coverage option.
“We have built a dedicated team that is committed to making certain that area residents will have the information and tools necessary to choose an affordable health care plan that works best for their families,” said Celeste Bondurant-Bell, director of Community Development. “We will provide multiple ways to assist local residents, including helping to determine an individual’s eligibility for a number of programs that assist with medical and dental expenses, including Medicaid, children’s health insurance and Medicare concerns.”
As a community health center, LRMC is uniquely positioned to reach uninsured individuals and families and promote the benefits of health coverage. Helping individuals enroll in insurance coverage through the marketplace fits well with Little River Medical Center’s mission of providing affordable care for everyone. Almost half of the center’s 23,000 patients are currently uninsured.
Insurance plans offered through the marketplace will cover physician visits, hospital stays, preventive care, prescriptions and more.
“Access to affordable health coverage is insufficient in low and moderate income households in Horry County,” said Bondurant-Bell. “It is this population that often foregoes preventive care and experiences greater health risks due to financial barriers, including lack of health insurance.”
Open enrollment starts Oct. 1 and will continue until March 31. Coverage for everyone enrolling prior to Dec. 15 will be effective Jan. 1, 2014.
