Coastal Carolina University has a new interim provost.

Ralph Byington, current dean of the Wall College of Business, was chosen to serve as provost until a search committee can choose a permanent person for the job.

Byington takes the place of former provost Rob Sheehan, who stepped down in May.

CCU associate professor Barbara Ritter will serve as interim Dean of the Wall College of Business.

CCU Pres. David DeCenzo said Byington was the right man for the interim post.

"One of the things I was looking for was someone who had an understanding of the issues facing us in the academic arena, a strategic focus and someone who would jump in and continue the activities and the momentum that we had," he said. "Ralph is very good and we are excited to have him in the position."

DeCenzo said later this summer he will begin searching for a someone to take the job permanently.

"The search committee that brought us Provost Sheehan consisted of 21 committee members and I anticipate having each of those areas represented again in our permanent provost position search," he said.
